Dogs, like all animals, need adequate water intake each day to remain healthy for proper organ function, joint lubrication and food digestion. Water helps your dog digest food and absorb the nutrient from his kibble.
Every important body function requires water. If enough water is not provided, dehydration follows. Here are a few of the symptoms you might see in dogs suffering from dehydration:
- Loss of energy
- Vomiting and/ or diarrhea
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Lack of appetite
- Excessive, ongoing panting
- Dry, sticky gums
- Sunken, dry eyes
- Weak pulse
Usually, animals only drink water when they’re thirsty. On hot days, or when your dog is playing, they may need extra water. Some dogs get dehydrated when they are stressed.
Here are our top tips what you can do to help re-hydrate your dog when necessary.
1. PROVIDE MORE WATER BOWLS
Leave plenty of water bowls through the house and garden. Your dogs will have lots of opportunity to keep themselves hydrated. Also you can try place water bowls in areas that have less animal or people. That can help your dog feel more secure about taking time to drink.
2. GET A DOG WATER FOUNTAIN
Some dogs prefer standing water, others are tempted to drink from bubbling fountains. Many pets are naturally drawn to running water and will drink more from a fountain than they will from a traditional water dish. Running water feels colder and more fresh than stagnant water. Try to experiment with automatic water fountains. It can be a great way to encourage your dog to drink.
3. ADD WATER TO YOUR DOG'S FOOD
You can add water to your dog‘s food if your dog eats mostly dry food. Try to add a small amount of water just to increase their water intake. Usually a lot of dogs enjoy change in texture. Be careful, introduce the extra fluid, because adding too much can be off putting for your pet. Also always clean out the bowl after they've finished.
4. MAKE DOGGY ICE POPS
Some dogs aren’t interested in water, but love licking ice cubes. Freezing dog ice pops are a fun way to provide your dog with extra hydration, especially in hot weather. Just fill an ice tray with small amount of wet food and water, or a blended mix of some kind of fruits or vegetables, and freeze it overnight.
5. WASH YOUR DOG'S WATER BOWLS DAILY
Dogs need constant access to clean water. Water should be changed at least once daily. Keep your dog‘s bowl fool with fresh water every single day. Moreover your dog‘s water bowl has to be clean. Wipe your dog‘s bowl dry before filling it with a clean water. Generally plastic bowls are not recommended for many dogs. First of all bowls made of plastic can be easily chewed or scratched by your dog, leaving places for bacteria to built up. Secondly, some dogs may develop an allergy to the plastic, resulting in a mild skin reaction on the chin or face. Choose stainless steel, porcelain or glass bowls over plastic.
